Training and Advice Norvento - Finite Element Modeling

J.R. Jiménez-Octavio F.J. López-Valdés

March 2024 - May 2024

Funding entity Norvento Tecnología S.L

The objective of the project is to provide Norvento Tecnología with specific training and advice in the field of computational finite element modeling.
In particular, different aspects of modeling with composite materials and their computational calculation will be analyzed, as well as the analysis of results obtained for structural elements in the field of wind energy generation.

Stage 1:
- Modeling of wind turbine blade (mesh, contacts and laminates).
- Failure criteria. Buckling. Wrinkling. Geometric nonlinearity.
- Definition of cores. Failures associated with cores. 2D and 3D modeling of cores.
- Optimization of the stacking of the wind turbine blade. Materials, orientations and number of layers based on bending and torsional rigidity.
- Modeling of joints (blade root focused on ultimate load). Transitions, metal-composite contacts and screws. Failures associated with prestressed joints
- Convergence of non-linear models. Troubleshooting. Substeps. Validation of results.

Stage 2:
- Fatigue in composites. Approach S/N.
- Advanced models for fatigue calculation in composite materials (blade root).
- Submodeling of the blade embedment area. Increasing mesh size locally.
- Obtaining composite properties based on fabric type and fiber and matrix properties.
- Impacts on composite materials. Failure criteria.

Layman's summary: The objective of the project is to provide Norvento Tecnología with specific training and advice in the field of computational finite element modeling. In particular, different aspects of modeling with composite materials and their computational calculation will be analyzed, as well as the analysis of results obtained for structural elements in the field of wind energy generation.
